Faculty Update: Smith Presents Paper
Dr. Mark Smith, Assistant Professor of Communication, presented a co-authored paper in October 2008 at the Great Plains Radio History Symposium at Kansas State.  The paper, "The Early Years of Talk Radio, WJAG, Norfolk, NE," chronicles a talk show that began as the Voice of the Street in 1932.  In the 1940s, the talk show and its programming techniques faced an FCC investigation that lingered for more than a year.  The co-author of the paper is Dr. Larry Walklin of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Faculty Update: Poyner Completes Busy Summer

Dr. Barry Poyner, Professor of Communication, edited a book this summer, This Is My Story:  Sharing the Gospel.  He wrote two devotional articles for Power for Today, Vol. 54:3, a quarterly magazine.  His review, “Precious Memories:  The Rhetoric of Southern Gospel Music” appeared in the Journal of Communication & Religion, Vol. 30:  383-385.  Poyner provides voiceovers, commercials, and segments for a TV show, One Another Christianity, that appears on Fox KYOU on Sundays at 8:00 a.m.  Finally, t
he Communication Faculty produced a customized COMM 170 Public Speaking text for this academic year.  Poyner served as editor/compiler and was assisted by students Nathan Vickers and Jackie Ross and faculty members Dr. Kevin Minch and Dr. James Cianciola. 

In addition, Poyner teaches Business and Professional Communication.  As part of the course, the students were required to attend an Etiquette Lunch with Truman State Career Center Director, Lesa Ketterlinus, in September (pictured below).
