Student Media Leaders Selected for 2006-2007 Academic Year
The Truman Student Media Board has selected the student media leaders for the 2006-2007 academic year.

The new leaders are: Marisa Butler, a junior art and pre-elementary education double major from Parkville, Mo., KTRM executive director; Erin Clark, a junior communication and English double major from Lincoln, Ill., Detours editor in chief; Sara DeGonia, a sophomore communication and English double major from Liberty, Mo., Index editor in chief; Erin Hickman, a junior English and pre-secondary education double major from Summersville, Mo., Echo yearbook editor in chief; and Andrew Richmond, a sophomore pre-business administration major from West Des Moines, Iowa, executive producer of News36.   --Truman Today

 

Truman Broadcasters Win Awards at 2006 MBEA Convention
News 36 and KTRM broadcast students won the most first place awards at the Missouri Broadcast Educators Association Conference March 31.

Professionals from the Missouri Broadcasters Association (MBEA) judged the students' work in radio and television production categories ranging from news and sports to music video and radio aircheck to script writing. Truman student broadcasters competed against universities throughout the state including schools with stations in the top 100 markets in the nation. Truman won seven first place awards and two second place awards.

Students Win Five First-Place Awards in SPJ Competition
Truman students won five first-place Mark of Excellence 2005 awards in the Society of Professional Journalists competition for Region VII announced April 7 in St. Louis. The region consists of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.  Thus for all individual awards, students were competing against large schools such as Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Iowa State and Nebraska. First-place winners continue to the national Mark of Excellence competition, with those results announced in the fall.

First-place winners include: Index: Best all-around non-daily published once a week; Index staff: Editorial writing; Lisette Metz Grulke: General news photography; Roger Meissen: Photo illustration; Chris Tharp: Sports photography.

Second-place winners are: Conor Nicholl: Online sports reporting; Alan Reininger: Online news; Chris Tharp: Sports photography.

Third place winners are: John Weeks, Courtney Rakers, Kelly Wikstrom: Radio in-depth reporting; Whitney McFerron: Breaking news reporting; Amy Deis: Feature writing; Roger Meissen: Sports photography.

Fifteen students attended the conference at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, accompanied by Karon Speckman, SPJ adviser.

 

Detours Wins Apple Award
Detours: An Explorer's Guide to the Midwest, a travel magazine focusing on the tri-state region of Iowa, Illinois and Missouri, won the Best in Show Apple Award at the National College Media Convention, March 15-18, in New York City.

The magazine won in the general-interest category. The competition pitted the publication against more than 30 student publications from across the United States, including colleges of every size. Index Wins Apple Award
The Index, Truman's weekly student-produced newspaper, won the Apple award as the best non-daily newspaper at the College Media Advisers National College Media Convention March 18, in New York City.

The Apple Award is one of two top awards presented each year to college student media. This is the third time in four years the Index has captured the honor. Truman's newspaper won against weekly student publications from across the country. A panel of New York media professionals selected the winners based on a variety of criteria including news judgment, journalistic quality, quality of writing, variety and diversity of news, photography and layout and design.
